Fabrication / Machining

Calspan's Machine and Sheet Metal Shops have a long history of developing precise, unique hardware to support our highly diversified experimental research and fabrication programs. These facilities also provide support to our outside customers. The machine and sheet metal shops, equipped with a complete array of machines, in combination with a range of services in planning and design allow us to fabricate specialized hardware ranging from small strain gage balances and wind tunnel models, component testing equipment for the automotive test industry, and specialized parts for our fleet of experimental airplanes.

Calspan's Electronic Shops have the capability to fabricate circuit boards, electronic enclosures, and chassis installation provisions. The electronic installations often require ruggedization to withstand the rigors of aircraft and automotive environments.

Quality control is provided via Calspan's in house inspection department. Certified to ISO 9001:2000, inspection equipment is calibrated to NIST standards. During the fabrication phase inspection is provided at all phases from receipt of incoming material through final assembly.

Integration

The Systems Engineering Group also provides hardware and systems integration support for in house and customer facilities and aircraft. Typical integration projects include:
  • Airborne System Installations
  • Sensors/Transducers
  • Cockpit Controllers
  • Computers
Calspan's team of engineers, fabricators, mechanics, and technicians work together closely, employing "Concurrent Engineering" principles to get the integration task done quickly and efficiently. Most Calspan personnel have expertise in more than one discipline which allows for a smaller, close-knit team with a more comprehensive understanding of the task at hand. For instance, it is common for a small group of in-house Calspan engineers, mechanics, and technicians to design, fabricate, install, and checkout modifications to one of our fleet of experimental airplanes prior to the beginning of a flight test program.
