Certification Testing to ASTM F2656
ASTM F2656 Certification
Manufacturers of innovative anti-ram barriers including bollards, gates, nets and wedges that desire to have their product listed on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Protective Design Center’s (PDC’s) website must have their barriers tested to ASTM F2656-15 by an independent laboratory like Calspan. We have been executing this test since this protocol’s inception in 2007, and over the years have gained invaluable expertise in supporting industry innovators.
The ASTM standard F2656-15, a Standard Test Method for Vehicle Crash Testing of Perimeter Barriers, was created to address a broad range of incident conditions by different vehicle types, at different impact velocities. It is also intended to define acceptable penetration limitations to help determine passive perimeter and active entry point barrier applicability based on the setback distance available at a particular site.
ASTM F2656 Certification Capabilities/Features
Calspan understands the stress manufacturers are under when their products are being tested, so we take the extra time to listen to concerns, answer questions, and work in a collaborative manner to get tests executed properly and on time. We are accredited to ISO 17025 to perform ASTM F2656-15 testing by Perry Johnson Laboratories Accreditation, Inc. (PJLA) under Certificate Number L13-137 and Accreditation Number 76654.
Calspan has the ability to achieve impact speed through the use of our 550 HP diesel drive controlled via a close-looped, velocity feedback servo-control system. At the conclusion of testing, we provide custom test reports and certification letters, which are configured to expedite PDC approval.
Through our collaborative approach and expertise in ASTM F2656 testing, Calspan’s customers enjoy innumerable benefits including our ability to:
- Assist with test article shipping and logistics
- Provide recommendations for 3rd party installation
- Offer flexible test schedules
- Manage proprietary information
- Issue test reports and certification letters shortly after each test
The Testing Process + Rating System
ASTM F2656 tests are typically conducted using a medium-duty truck whose weight is within 6,800 +/- 140 kg (15,000 +/- 309 lb.) traveling at a speed of either 48.3 km/h (30 mph) or 80.5 km/h (50 mph). Barriers are rated based on the truck bed’s dynamic penetration past the barrier. These ratings are P1 for less than or equal to 1 m (3.3 ft.), P2 for 1.01 to 7 m (3.3.1 to 23.0 ft.), P3 for 7.01 to 30 m (23.1 to 98.4 ft.) and P4 for 30 m (98 ft.) or greater.
