Contract / Cost
Prices associated with wind tunnel testing
can be broken down into two categories, non-recurring
and recurring costs.
- Non-recurring items are
associated with all pretest and installation
activities required to prepare a model for
testing, as well as all model removal and
disassembly activities and vary with model/instrumentation
complexity.
- These include pretest and data reduction
documentation preparation, instrumentation calibration,
model inspection, model build up/check out and installation
into the facility.
- Recurring items are those
associated with actual (wind-on) testing.
- For example, higher Mach numbers or Reynolds
numbers require more electrical energy thereby incurring
proportionately higher costs.
Contract type can be flexible
Fixed Price (FP) Contract
- Provides a FP for the estimated pretest, installation, and removal
- Provides a fixed rate for the estimated test hours
- Out of scope testing requirements must be funded separately or negotiated on-site
Cost Plus Fixed Fee (CPFF) contract
- Customer is responsible for actual test and administrative costs incurred plus a fixed fee
- Test costs can vary based upon energy utilization, energy pricing and administrative rate fluctuation
- Calspan TWT review of your test plan is required to accurately estimate test size

Scheduling
- Scheduling flexibility and responsiveness
has been one of the cornerstones of the TWT since
1947. We continually strive to meet our customer's
long-term schedules as well as their short-term emergency
needs.
- Test programs are tentatively scheduled at
the time of our response to your request for quotation
based upon the wind tunnel's current availability.
- This test time cannot be finalized
until Calspan has received authorization for full
funding and is subject to prior sale
as well as the United States Government Defense
Priorities and Allocations Rating System.
- For international (Non-U.S.) contracts, testing
cannot commence until a Technical Assistance Agreement
and an Export License from the US Department of State
has been received.
