On January 18, 2018, Calspan celebrated the Grand Opening of it’s new, state-of-the-art crash test laboratory. Since then, the lab has been crashing cars daily to provide vehicle manufacturers with quality data in support of developing the safest vehicles to get from one place to another.

Gerald Goupil, Director of Vehicle Crash Testing at Calspan, expressed “We are ecstatic about the response to the opening of the new facility and the increased interest in testing with Calspan.” The new crash laboratory is able to run tests to help manufacturers develop new vehicles and to verify that vehicles comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS); including FMVSS 214 which was recently awarded to Calspan.

Goupil also commented on the new facility’s capability to keep even the most confidential prototype vehicles secure, “The security found at our facility is unparalleled to any other independent crash lab in the U.S.. We can receive a car into the lab then prepare it for and execute the test all under one roof.” Goupil explains. “Prototype vehicle testing requires this type of security. Furthermore, that manufacturers like coming to Calspan because they are able to test their vehicle in the same lab that the government uses to verify compliance to vehicle crash safety standards.”

Calspan’s crash laboratory is the most capable in the U.S.. Its MESSRING MicroTrack and propulsion system allow test vehicles to achieve a perfect impact point and test speed. High-definition, high-speed cameras are used to capture the test from start to finish at 1,000 frames per second, including unobstructed underbody views from Calspan’s massive photo pits. The highly secure, fully enclosed test track makes the lab ideal for executing new vehicle development, pre-production tests on prototype vehicles, production verification, and design improvements (ie optional NCAP tests).
