Calspan has been an integral partner with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on their Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program. Calspan leveraged its expertise and experience to instrument and fly an L-39 Albatros aircraft to support Artificial Intelligence (A.I.)-based dogfighting algorithm development. Implementing A.I. in future generations of fighter aircraft will automate dogfighting and allow pilots to focus on managing the battlespace in its entirety.

Calspan hosted a DARPA ACE Integration Quarterly event at their facility in Niagara Falls, New York, in May of 2021. Calspan's innovative efforts continue to test the limits and possibilities of technology and have captured the interest of the public eye in an article published by The New Yorker. Calspan's ability to test advanced unmanned flight control applications are highlighted in an article titled "The Rise of A.I. Fighter Pilots," and can be read here: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/01/24/the-rise-of-ai-fighter-pilots

Calspan's Vice President of Flight Research, Paul Schifferle, is featured and quoted in the article. Calspan continues to demonstrate its ability to take ideas to flight and make the impossible, possible.
