Certification Testing to IWA 14-1:2013

The IWA 14-1:2013 is the International Workshop Agreement that specifies the essential impact performance requirements for a vehicle security barrier and a test method for rating its performance when subjected to a single impact by a test vehicle not driven by a human being. It was created to address a broad range of incident conditions by different vehicle types, at different impact velocities and to define acceptable penetration limitations to help define passive perimeter and active entry point barriers applicability based on the setback distance available at a particular site. This is accomplished by establishing a comprehensive range of test conditions, designations and penetration performance levels.

Calspan’s barrier testing facility, located in Buffalo, New York, is accredited to certify barriers to the IWA 14-1:2013 standard. The test track facility combines a flat and level asphalt surface with a mounted rail and axle-mounted roller system. This combination of equipment means that the facility is capable of adapting to the needs of a variety of barriers, and may be quickly configured to provide testing for a variety of barriers or standards.

Real-time and high speed video are delivered securely, in addition to photography taken before, after, and during the test. A comprehensive data package and report is delivered quickly after test completion, along with certification letters. Additional cameras not required by the procedure may be requested and operated by Calspan staff during the test, ensuring that high quality video is captured for purposes other than certification.

In addition to IWA testing, Calspan provides the ability to test on an international scale with PAS and ASTM testing.
